I'll try to keep this as simple as possible. Please read the other explanations as well and send me an email if anything is not clear.

MALE plant characteristics: Males are taller than females and grow faster (so when time comes they can pollinate females from above). Males have much less leaf coverage than females and the main stock of the males is thin and stretchy. In most cases the male plant is the one towering above the others trying to reach the light first. The sex organ of a males (produced with in days of bloom on set and up to 14 days, depending on the strain) looks like balls (colour green). The balls gather in bunches along the fan leafs as on the picture (right). Notice the long distance between one fan leaf and the next one (blue arrow on the picture). The picture (inside the red circle on the right) is of a male plant in a late stage of its bloom and you can see some of the balls have opened (and thus produced pollen). This plant was most likely used to pollinate the females so they could produce seeds. You have to spot the male balls which are green at the early stage of growth much earlier than on the picture. |

FEMALE plant characteristics: Females are shorter than males and tend to produce more leafs, which cover the plant everywhere. The sex organ of a female plant is distinguished by its long (white) hairs growing on top of the bud. These hair turn a different (darker) colour with time closer to the harvest. Telling them apart: The difficulty comes when you have to determine sex early on. The male plants are not always taller and for a novice the difference is not obvious at first. Be vigilant and check your garden daily for the earliest signs of balls on male flowers. The analogy to explain the difference between the two sexes is as follows: Males have testicles (thus balls) and females have pubic hair (thus hairs). The balls are green at first and tend to hang downwards from the stem. Females have bunches of white hairs facing mostly upwards. |
